~ Who We Are ~

Superior craftsmanship and dedicated customer service have been family traditions for five generations at Wm. J. Mills & Co. Known first as sailmakers, Wm. J. Mills & Co. came to Greenport at the tip of Long Island's North Fork in the late 19th century. William Mills, a Scottish immigrant, moved from Northport, on Long Island Sound, to Patchogue on the South Shore, and then to Greenport. A growth spurt in New York City led to greater demand for fish and for shipping in general. Greenport was the bustling place to be for recreational and commercial water-related activities.

Today, sails are but a small part of the business, which has seen its most recent success in awnings, custom-canvas products, and canvas accessories for Boston Whaler boats. It remains largely a local business, serving the eastern segment of Long Island--from Wading River to Orient on the North Fork and from Eastport to Montauk on the South. However, internationally known for its Whaler canvas, the company continues to ship these and other products world-wide.

Wm. J. Mills & Co. provides canvas items for individuals and for businesses: awnings, tents, umbrellas, shelters, bags, covers, and other items for home or commercial use, as well as sails, dodgers, sun tops, and a variety of covers for boats large and small. Wm. J. Mills & Co. has the largest computerized cutting table on Long Island and the largest sail loft on Eastern Long Island, and we utilize specialized fabricating equipment developed to meet our clients' unique needs.

Wm. J. Mills & Co. looks forward to another 120 years of service to its clients, its community, and the industry.

Canvas makes it better, and Mills makes it best.  Since 1880--serving you today!
